What’s a Read-a-Thon?

A Read-a-Thon is a set period of time when students aim to log as many reading minutes as possible!

Our Read-a-Thon has two primary goals:

  1. Most importantly, we want to kick off 2026 by getting our students excited about making reading a daily habit!

  2. We want to give our students a way to help raise money for the Almond Elementary community.

This year, Almond readers will have 19 days to meet their reading goals, beginning on Monday, January 12. Our school-wide reading goal is 1,900 hours!

Our teachers and our school librarian Mrs. McCullough will also set reading goals by grade level and provide opportunities to clock reading minutes at school. Please look out for information on this from your child’s teacher.

Why are we doing this as a fundraiser? Does Almond do a Read-a-Thon every year?

When students ask friends and family to sponsor them during the Read-a-Thon, they help play a role in raising the critical funds the PTA provides to support the following school needs every year:

  • Technology purchases for staff and classrooms

  • Classroom supplies and teaching materials

  • Library materials and playground equipment

  • Special school assemblies, Family Science Night, and Field Day

  • Starting Arts K-3 Program – Music, Art, Dance, Drama

  • Field Trip transportation for grades 4-6

During this year’s Read-a-Thon we will also raise funds by selling donated “experiences” such as teacher-hosted parties and summer camps.

We plan to alternate our annual fundraising focus between a gala (requires a major volunteer effort) and a Read-a-Thon (less volunteer effort). The last Read-a-Thon was held during the 2021-22 school year and we’re excited to bring it back to Almond!

Who participates?

We’re aiming for 100% family participation at Almond. Your support makes all the difference for creating excitement among students and helping raise funds for the Almond PTA.

How do I sign up my student?

We know your time is valuable. We also know that providing the best education for our students is critical. That's why we're encouraging everyone to activate their students' Read-A-Thon account as soon as possible so that students have time to reach out to sponsors and are set to start logging their reading minutes on January 12. The steps to sign up are straightforward and should take fewer than 5 minutes.

Steps to Participate

1. Register your student with this link: https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/DoYMcE/

2. Join us for a Kick-Off event at State Street Market on Monday, Jan 12, 5-8 PM. Linden Tree Books will be on-site with a pop-up shop to jump-start your student’s reading selections. A portion of food and book purchases will go towards the Almond PTA. It’s a wonderful way to connect, celebrate reading, and give back—all while enjoying a delicious night out!

3. Send your student’s personal Read-A-Thon account page to friends and family — let’s make this our most successful Read-A-Thon yet!

4. Throughout the Read-A-Thon, look out for announcements about sales for teacher-hosted parties, summer camps, experiences, and more!

We can’t do this without you and your student. Let’s turn pages, raise funds, and have a blast — together we can make this our best Read-A-Thon yet!
