Does my child need a shirt for JO?

1

Yes. Athletes must wear their official JO shirt in school colors. PTA provides one free shirt per student to 4th graders and new students in 5th or 6th grade.

My child outgrew their shirt. How do I get a new one?

2

You may purchase new shirts in the Classroom Parent store.

Does my student need to qualify for JO?

3

No, all 4th-6th grade LASD students are invited to participate. Student will choose 3 events to train for during PE.

The only exception is relay team which requires qualification

How do relays work?

4

Each grade will have up to 6 relay teams: 3 for boys and 3 for girls. Each team is comprised of 4 runners plus one alternate.

Students participate in time trials during PE. Families will then be notified if your child qualified for a relay and must either accept or decline the position. If you accept the position, your child will be assigned to a relay team based on their time trials; switching teams is not permitted.

Note that all relay team members should expect to attend 4-6 relay practices, usually held in the early morning, as well as JO itself. Each team will need at least one parent coach.

Is there training for relay coaches?

Yes! Information about the training session will go out with the email soliciting parent coaches. Each relay team will be issued a bag with a baton and poker chips to be used during your practices.

When are relay practices?

If you’re the coach, good news! You can choose when relay practices are (but please consult your team about availability before finalizing). Many teams will schedule half of their practices at Almond either early morning, at lunch, or after school. Be sure to check with the office before scheduling practice during school hours.

It is helpful to have at least 1-2 practices on an actual track. A schedule and sign-ups for using the track at LAHS will be made available. Please follow all guidelines about track usage as LAHS may revoke our permission to use the track if infractions occur.
